People from Britain and Ireland first came to live in Australia in 1788. They brought different dialects (方言)of English with them. These diffirent kinds of English began to mix and change. The newcomers soon began to speak with their own typical accent and vocabulary. More and more people came to Australia during the Gold Rush in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some came from Britain and Ireland; others came from non-English speaking countries, Australian English continued to grow and change.

Australian English has also been influenced by American English. During the Second World War, there were many American soldiers staying in Australia. More importantly, American television shows and music have been popular in Australia since the 1950s.

Australians use many words that other English speakers do not use. The famous Australian greeting, for example, is G’day! A native forest is called the bush and central Australia is called the outback. Many words were brought to Australia from Britain and Ireland. For example, mate means “friend”,and it is still used in Britain, Some of these words have changed in meaning. Some words have come from Australian original languages, many of which are names for animals, plants and places, like dingo and kangaroo.

Australian spelling comes from British spelling. In words like organise and realise, -ise is the expected and taught spelling method- In words like colour, favourite, -our is the normal, but nouns such as the Labor Party and Victor Harbor are spelled with -or. Program, on the other hand, is more common than programme.

There are also differences in the definition (定义)of words Australians use in different parts of the country. For example, football means “rugby” in New South Wales and Queensland, but “Australian rules football” in everywhere else in Australia. In New South Wales,a swimming costume is called a cossie or swimmers, while in Queensland it is called togs and bathers in Victoria.

Next time you raise an eyebrow at the views of your partner, friend, brother, sister or colleague, remember they could be helping to make you smarter. New research shows that intelligence (智力)is not fixed but can be improved throughout adulthood by family members, bright mates and intellectually challenging careers. The study challenges the commonly held belief that intelligence is fixed by the age of about 18.

Scientific consensus (共识)suggests intelligence is controlled by genes, with environmental factors (因素)such as schooling and nutrition playing a part up to this age. After this point, IQ scores remain unchanged. But James Flynn, professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, argues that people can “upgrade” their intelligence throughout their lives. He believes intellectual stimulation (刺激)from other people is important as the “brain seems to be rather like a muscle — the more you use it, the stronger it gets”. So people who share a home or workplace with the intellectually challenged risk seeing their IQ levels nosedive as a result.

Professor Flynn analyzed US intelligence tests from the last 65 years and created new jq “age tables,' He found a bright ten-year-old with brothers and sisters of average intelligence will suffer a five to ten point IQ disadvantage compared to a similar child with equally bright brothers and sisters. However, children with a low IQ could gain six to eight points by having brighter brothers and sisters and special educational treatment to help pull them up.

Professor Flynn concluded that although genetics and early life experiences determine about 80% of intelligence, the remaining 20% is linked to lifestyle. This means people can

their IQ, or allow it to fall, by ten points or more.

He suggests 出e ^est way to improve IQ levels is to socialize with bright friends, and find an intellectually challenging job.

67.According to the text, it is commonly believed that .

  A. people s IQ levels fall when they get old

B.11 is wise to share family members, views

  D. doing something challenging is good for one's intelligence

  69. Which of the following can help improve one's intelligence according to Professor Flynn?

A.Making many friends. B.Staying with smart people.

C.Doing exercise every day.D.Learning from brothers or sisters.

  70. What can we learn from the passage?

  A. You will become smarter as time goes on.

  B. You still have the chance to become smarter after 18.

  C. You are likely to become smarter by doing different jobs.

  D. You are surely smarter at the age of 35 than at the age of 18.

  Dear Susan,

I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble adapting to your new school life in America, but this situation can be easily changed if you take my advice.

Firstly, you are supposed to devote yourself to English, which can enable you to get more opportunities to communicate with others. Secondly, making some close friends really makes a great difference to your feeling, as friendship can help you forget your own loneliness without feeling distant. Thirdly, it will be a good idea if you take an active part in various after-class activities, which will help to make your life more colourful and interesting. I firmly believe by doing so, you will have a cheerful state of mind and be happier with your new life soon.

I hope you will find these ideas useful.

  Yours sincerely,

  Li Hua

  (Text 1)

M: Good evening. What can I do for you?

W: Hi. I’d like to book a double room with TV and Internet service.

  (Text 2)

M: When can I go back to work?

W: I suggest that you wait and rest until your temperature goes back to normal.

  (Text 3)

M: Mom, I do love dogs. They are so cute and smart. Can I have one?

W: Well, don’t you think they are rather noisy and dirty? How about a turtle?

M: No, Mom! Turtles are ugly and so lazy.

  (Text 4)

  M: I’m going to move.

W: Move again? Where this time?

M: It’s a new apartment on Victoria Street,

W: Oh, that’s good. You don’t have to leave home so early every morning to get to school on time.

  (Text 5)

M: May, have you seen the new iPad 4? It looks so useful. You can surf the Internet and watch movies on it.

W: Yes, I already have one. I also use it to play games and read news online.

  M: Oh, that’s so nice.

W: I hear that they’re on sale this week. Why not get one for yourself?

  (Text 6)

M: What did you do after graduation?

W: I’d planned to be a teacher, but then I was offered a good job doing marketing, so I changed my mind.

M: Sounds like you’re happy with your decision.

W: I am. I enjoy my job very much. By the way, have you not had any job offers yet?

M: I had one, but I didn’t like the job very much. I’d also really wanted to attend graduation school, but I was afraid I couldn’t pay that much money.

W: I think you need to make a decision, stick to it and don’t be afraid of difficulties.

  (Text 7)

W: Look, Jack! Here’s a job that might interest you.

M: Are you sure? The last job interview you sent me to was really a disaster.

W: Well, look! It’s a big company. You might get to travel.

M: What kind of company is it, though?

W: Um, let’s see. It is a newspaper office. They say the pay is really good. And oh, look! They give you a car to travel around. That’s not bad, is it?

M: Do they say anything about needing to have experience of a journalist?

W: No, they want someone young and energetic. Oh, yes they want a university graduate, so that’s OK. You’ve been to university. The only thing is that you have to travel, but then that’s what the company car is for.

M: Perhaps I will have a close look at it.

  (Text 8)

W: John, when you were little, what did you dream you’d grow up to be?

M: Oh, I dreamed that I’d be a pilot when I grew up.

W: So what happened? Did you just lose interest in being a pilot?

M: No. My parents said it was too dangerous, and they wanted me to find a safer job. How about you? What did you dream of becoming when you were a little girl?

W: When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a great scientist, but now, as you can see, I’m just a common office clerk.

M: So what are your dreams now?

W: Well, I really want to be a translator some day, so I’m working hard to learn English.

M: You’re so good at language learning. Your French and Italian are already fluent. Well, I hope you succeed in that dream some day!

W: Hi, Bob! I am so glad that you came.

M: Of course I’d come. I couldn’t think of a better chance to see all my old friends.

W: It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten years since graduation.

M: How time flies! How are things going with you?

W: It’s only recently that I’ve been able to start settling down. How about you? Are you still with Jenny?

M: Yeah, Jenny and I got married right after graduation. It was hard for the first three years—I was supporting us both while she continued her studies—but now things are getting better. I work as a manager in a trade company and she’s working at a law firm. It’s all started to come together and we’re finally able to make a life for ourselves.

W: Oh, that sounds wonderful. I have always known you two would make it. I hope I can keep in better contact with you.

M: Definitely! Actually, we just moved into a new place. There’s a house-warming party this Saturday, if you are free? I know Jenny would love to see you again and it should be a good party.

W: Sounds great! I am free this weekend and I’ll be there.

In 1921, long before the Walt Disney Company turned Pooh (维尼熊) into an international star of TV and films, Christopher Robin Milne was given a toy bear on his first birthday from his father, A.A. Milne, who bought the stuffed (填充的) animal from a store. The stuffed animal was named Edward Bear. Years later, Edward was named Winnie. From the time Christopher Robin Milne was a baby until he was about 8 years old, he would receive different stuffed animals.

A.A. Milne was a famous English author. As he watched his son interact (互动) with Winnie and friends, A.A. Milne thought his child’s interaction with the collection of animals would make a great bedtime story. So Milne worked with artist Ernest H. Five years later, Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and the rest of the team appeared on screen for the first time in Winnie-the-Pooh and the Honey Tree. Gardening is popular in many parts of the world. This outdoor activity gives us beautiful plants, pleasant smelling flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables. But it also does a lot of good to our health.

Gardening connects people. When you are gardening, you are outdoors. So it is a perfect chance to meet and spend time with your neighbors. Most people love to talk about their hobbies, and gardeners are no different. They usually enjoy showing people what they are growing. And most enjoy sharing advice and stories about their gardens almost as much as sharing flowers and vegetables from their gardens.

Gardening is a great activity for children. It gets them outdoors and off computers, televisions and cell phones. Gardening is also a great teacher. It can teach a child about where food comes from and healthy eating. It also helps them to understand that the natural resources (资源) are not inexhaustible and the importance of using them carefully.

Then, when you garden, you must move around. All the different movements needed for gardening, like bending and lifting, work small muscles (肌肉) in the body. And you can easily get good exercise when you are digging holes or pulling grasses.

In a study, researches looked at more than 2,800 people over the age of 60. They studied their lifestyle habits, activities and health over a 16-year period. They found that gardening could lower the risk of future dementia (痴呆) by 36%. Gardening requires people do many repeated actions, such as picking off dying flowers. These actions have a calming influence on the brain. The brain is still active but not in the same way when we use computers.

You’ll feel wonderful when what you grow in a garden looks, smells, feels and tastes good.

  12. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people would think of Confucius, whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution to the education today.

Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.

Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children from noble families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.

Today, people still follow Confucius’ lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned. “When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities and follow them.”

He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people puzzled (困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy.”

Confucius is not only a great teacher, but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. “A person should be strict with himself, but be kind to others.” he said.

  【解析】D篇

  本文讲述了男性与女性相比较,不擅长照顾孩子。同时也列举了一些说错了话的母亲的例子。

  32. 推理判断题。根据文章第二段内容,尤其是第二段最后两句My mother served kid food to kids. My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food.

The fact is, many Asian males are terrible at kid—related things. In fact, I am one of them.

Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 percent of the time.

  Dear Li Ming,

I am writing to you because I think I have something really serious to communicate with you.I notice that recently you often go to the Netbar and the Game Centre together with several friends. As your best friend,I am very concerned about you, because sometimes you even do not have classes in order to play. Friends play such an important part in our life that we have to choose our friends carefully. At the same time,we should always remember that true friends will never ask us to do things that will not be good for us.Thus I do not think the friends around you are your true friends and I believe you are smart enough to tell right from wrong.

I hope you will make a wise decision soon.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
